(WJAR) -- Chickens arrived at the Johnson & Wales University's new chicken coop at its Harborside Campus on Friday.
The 19 chickens, which were hatched on campus in July, arrived at the new enclosure for the school's new sustainable and multidisciplinary initiative.
According to university officials, the project will bring together students from various programs including animal sciences and sustainable food system who will care for the hens.
Johnson & Wales University officials said the eggs produced by the hens will be used for research involving animal science, sustainability culinary nutrition and product development.
The chickens will eventually be used for consumption in culinary classes following approve from the Department of Health, university spokesperson said.
"Coming from New Jersey where you don't see a lot of farm animals around it's nice to be able to pass by everyday and see that these are the future of what we might be studying in Johnson & Wales," a student at the campus said.
The school held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the new enclosure.
