The Toronto Blue Jays are enjoying their best season in about a decade, and George Springer has been leading the charge.
After a down 2024 season, the 35-year-old has been red-hot this season. He leads the Blue Jays with 26 home runs and 16 stolen bases. While Toronto has been struggling of late, Springer has been as good as ever.
Over his last 45 games, the former World Series MVP has an incredible stat line of 66 hits, 50 runs, 39 RBIs, 16 home runs and nine stolen bases. According to OptaSTATS, that puts Springer in rarefied air, with only Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig being able to put up those types of numbers in a 45-game stretch.
Gehrig was the last to do it in 1931, meaning Springer is on a run that hasn't been seen in 94 years.
Springer has proven time and time again this season that age is just a number, and he isn't showing any signs of slowing down. Injuries have been a bit of a concern over the season, but he has looked as good as ever at the most important time of the regular season.
Having his name up there with two of the most iconic baseball players of all time is a testament to his play.
It's been a record-setting season for the Blue Jays in more than just one way. In August, Toronto became the first team in MLB history to blow multiple leads in the ninth, 10th, and 11th innings and still find a way to get the win.
The Jays also recorded the most hits ever in a three-game series, hammering the Colorado Rockies for 63 in early August.
With the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox hot on their heels, the Jays are getting exactly what they need from Springer and their other star hitters. It's the bullpen that will need to start pulling its weight in the final stretch.
