Commodores fans now have the chance to secure items to help commemorate the history victory USATSI
Days after Vanderbilt shocked then-No. 1 Alabama for the biggest win in program history, the Commodores are cashing in. The school is auctioning off key pieces of memorabilia from the historic victory for fans as a major fundraiser.
Among the pieces of equipment for auction are SEC pylons from the game, game balls and a game helmet. The website offers personalized autographs from Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea on any of the products. As of publication, the helmet auction has already cleared $13,000.
However, the headliner of the auction is pieces of the field goal crossbar at FirstBank Stadium. After the game, fans stormed the field and tore down the goalposts, and amazingly enough, a convoy of fans carried the uprights down the Broadway entertainment district and threw it into the Cumberland River. The posts were fished out of the water and were sold in both 4- and 8-inch pieces. The online auction claims the pieces have already all been sold only 12 hours later.
The Commodores shocked the Crimson Tide 40-35 behind a legendary performance from quarterback Diego Pavia. The win was the first by Vanderbilt against Alabama since 1984 and the program's first ever win over an AP No. 1-ranked opponent. Vandy's 40 points in the win were the most the program has put up against a Tide defense since 1906.
