MESA, AZ (AZFamily) -- A crash has caused a massive fire and chemical spill, shutting down an intersection near an East Valley freeway on Friday morning.
According to Mesa firefighters, multiple vehicles crashed near Country Club Drive and Iron Avenue, just south of the U.S. 60. Crews arrived and found one vehicle engulfed, and firefighters began an aggressive attack on the flames and smoke.
Firefighters say a pool cleaning truck was also involved in the collision, causing a chemical spill in the intersection. At least six people have been rushed to the hospital, but their current conditions are unknown.
A massive cloud of white smoke could be seen in the middle of the intersection. One vehicle could be seen with visible damage to its rear end.
Arizona's Family has reached out to the Department of Public Safety for information about possible injuries and what sparked the fire.
Crews from Mesa Fire, Gilbert Fire and Rescue and Tempe Fire are working to clean up the scene.
The overpass of Country Club Drive and Country Club in both directions will be completely shut down for several hours. Drivers are asked to avoid the intersection or expect delays.
