LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Winter weather expected to sweep Georgia this week is already causing problems. United Ebony Society's annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade in Gwinnett County has been put on ice.
What we know:
The parade was supposed to kick off with an opening ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center on Langley Drive. Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson was supposed to serve as the Grand Marshal at the parade starting at noon.
There was also a celebration scheduled to follow, with food, vendors and entertainment until 5 p.m. All of that has been put on the back burner.
The backstory:
Dozens of Georgia counties are under an extreme cold warning, among a number of other issued winter weather-related alerts, over Martin Luther King, Jr. Day weekend, with temperatures expected to dip into the teens some nights.
There's a threat of snow and icy roads in metro Atlanta and North Georgia from now until Tuesday.
In fact, the Georgia Department of Transportation has already deployed brine trucks to pre-treat the roads.
What you can do:
There are still plenty of ways you can celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, even from the comfort of your own home.
Starting at 9 a.m. on Monday, FOX 5 Atlanta will live stream the 2025 MLK Day Beloved Community Commemorative Service being held at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Learn more.
