English heritage site creates new artefact archive

An English Heritage site is undergoing renovations to create a new archive space for artefacts nearly lost to January's flooding.

Archaeologists in Wiltshire will be turning Avebury Manor's old library into an archive storage area.

The artefacts have been previously housed in the old racket court on the grounds.

Dr Ros Cleal, who is overseeing the transfer, told BBC Radio Wiltshire they have 30,000 to 40,000 individual artefacts at the manor. The collection includes thousands of flint implements collected over decades.

She said: "We've got about 1700 boxes to move - we hope it won't take too long.

"We've got some brilliant collection assistants who are helping - we know where everything's going, it's all got a home waiting for it, so lots of hard work to do."

Dr Cleal said that the collection is often visited by researchers which is part of the reason why they want to make it very accessible.

The trust are protecting the original flooring of the library by putting in a new floor.

The archaeologist added: "The whole set up is just sitting in the room so we haven't attached anything to the historic building.

"If it comes out it'll all come out and it'll be just as it was before."
