WATERBURY, CT (WFSB) - Two individuals have been arrested in connection with a disturbing incident involving a 6-month-old child who sustained second- and third-degree burns.
The Waterbury Police Department began investigating the case after receiving a report from Saint Mary's Hospital on October 24.
The baby was brought to the hospital's emergency room with severe burns on their body, prompting immediate medical attention.
Detectives from the Waterbury Police Department's Special Victims Unit launched an investigation and identified the child's mother, 36-year-old Keturah Williams, and her partner, 51-year-old Damon Martin, as the individuals responsible for the child's care at the time of the incident.
According to police, the child had reportedly rolled off a bed and landed on a hot electric heating element, causing the injuries.
Investigators believe that both Williams and Martin were present when the incident occurred but delayed seeking medical help.
During this time, the couple also consumed alcohol and drugs, further impairing their ability to properly respond to the child's injuries, police said.
Following treatment at Saint Mary's Hospital, the child was transferred to Connecticut Children's Medical Center for further care.
The child has since been released from the hospital, but remains in the custody of the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF).
On November 4, 2024, Williams and Martin were arrested and charged with risk of injury to a minor, impairing the morals of a child, and cruelty to persons.
Both suspects turned themselves in to authorities on November 5, 2024.
Williams was held on a $75,000 bond, while Martin was held on a higher bond of $150,000. Both are awaiting court arraignment.
In addition to the victim, two other children were living in the residence at the time of the incident. They have since been removed from the home and placed in the custody of DCF.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities continue to urge anyone with information to come forward.
