Dr. Rolando Macasaet

Dr. Rolando Macasaet

Dr. Rolando Macasaet -- a name that echoes through the lives of countless individuals across generations. Born on June 7, 1940, in Talisay, Batangas, Philippines, on the shores of Taal volcano, Dr. Macasaet excelled academically from an early age. Yet his life began in the shadows of adversity. During World War II, as the brutality of the occupying forces escalated, his family escaped up a mountainside. As a young child, he survived by foraging in the jungle, a testament to the resilience that would define his remarkable life. From these humble beginnings, he rose to become a thriving physician, husband, father, and cherished member of his community.

One of his proudest moments came in 1976 when he was granted United States citizenship during the nation's bicentennial year, a fitting milestone for a man who embraced the American dream and enriched the lives of so many within his adopted country.

Dr. Macasaet graduated as salutatorian from Talisay High School before pursuing his medical education at Far Eastern University School of Medicine in Manila. Upon passing the Philippine Medical Board exams, he became a licensed physician and surgeon in 1965. That same year, he was recruited to the United States to continue his medical training in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

His career spanned 45 years of dedicated service in rural Wisconsin. Practicing until he was almost 80 years old, delivering 2,000 babies via C-section, performing over 100,000 surgeries, and logging more than 200,000 patient encounters. Trained at the level of cardiothoracic surgery, he ultimately chose the path of a country generalist, relishing the opportunity to serve his community with a versatile and old-school approach to medicine. From pyloric stenosis and pediatric surgeries to carpal tunnel releases, gynecological procedures, and everyday general practice, Dr. Macasaet's breadth of skill and unflagging dedication defined him as a true general surgeon.

Dr. Macasaet was known for his relentless dedication. During one catastrophic blizzard, he refused to let the weather stop him from saving a life. In a snowplow, he arrived just in time to perform a C-section, bringing a baby girl safely into the world. That baby would later grow up to have children of their own, delivered by none other than Dr. Macasaet. Generations intertwined by his hands -- a testament to his enduring legacy.

His commitment to the community continued to resonate even through his children. Dr. Tony Macasaet, his son for example, followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a respected emergency physician and leader. The two even had the opportunity to work in the same hospital together, occasionally passing on care from the ER to the OR. Tony loves sharing: "locals often double-take when I walk into the room, thinking it's him for a moment. After a pause, I smile and say, 'Yes, Doc Mac ... version 1.5.'"

Dr. Macasaet's journey to the United States was as ambitious as it was inspiring. Growing up with humble roots, he envisioned a future where he could uplift not only his family but his entire community. After earning his medical degree, he pursued advanced training at Milwaukee Deaconess Hospital and Children's Hospital. Along the way, he met Gigi, a mail delivery girl in the same hospital, on a date where he was meant to be the driver for another doctor. That night marked the start of a love story that would span nearly 56 years.

In 1973, Rolando and Gigi settled in Viroqua, Wisconsin, where he joined the Hirsh Clinic and later Vernon Memorial Healthcare. Though recruited by other locales, the couple found Viroqua far and away the most welcoming and charming. He was not just a physician but a friend, neighbor, and tireless advocate for his patients, from townspeople to Amish and all in-between. He co-founded the historic renowned Viroqua Public Market, finding immense joy in contributing to a vibrant community experience. Generations of families trusted him with their care, and he became known for delivering babies whose parents he had also delivered, creating a ripple of love and service through the decades.

Outside his professional life, Dr. Macasaet was a man of many talents and interests. He loved woodworking and fixing things with his hands. He was also adept at sewing and took pride in mending clothes. An avid reader, he developed the habit of reading aloud to his wife, a cherished ritual that brought them closer. His love for animals was evident in the way he treated pets as true members of the family. He delighted in ballroom dancing and singing karaoke, bringing smiles to gatherings with his spirited renditions. And in cooking traditional Filipino dishes, particularly when attempting his sister's "famous" cornbread recipe. His grandchildren held a very special place in his heart, and his love for them was boundless.

Dr. Macasaet was preceded in death by his father, Andres Macasaet; his mother, Petra Arriola Macasaet; and his sister, Dr. Perla Macasaet-Kushida (Robert Kushida). He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 56 years, Marjorie "Gigi" Weber Macasaet; his children, Dr. Tony Macasaet, Laurie Macasaet (James), David Macasaet (Elizabeth), Rachel Macasaet-Olson (Christopher); and his grandchildren, Emma, Elia, and Devdan. He also leaves behind his devoted sisters, Fe Abcede-De Leon and Jojo Macasaet-Williams (Dr. Ernie Williams), along with numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, and a wide circle of extended family and friends who mourn his passing.

A gathering will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua. A time for sharing memories will begin at 2:15 p.m. Dr. Macasaet will be laid to rest at the Viroqua Cemetery. Online Condolences may be expressed at www.vossfh.com.
