Houston Texans in talks over leaving stadium that's just 23-year-old

THE Houston Texans are considering leaving their stadium for a new project.

NRG Stadium is just 23 years old, but it could be vacant soon as the Texans explore options for the future.

According to Texans spokesperson Omar Majzoub, NRG stadium is still the team's "priority."

"Our priority has always been to support a renovation of NRG Stadium and that's where our focus remains," Majzoub said.

"As we've said before, we are committed to exploring all potential solutions to ensure long-term success and we look forward to working with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Harris County and HSCCC (the Harris County Sports and Convention Corp.) in identifying the best path forward."

The stadium was publicly funded, and it seems that those in the Houston area aren't on board with the idea of abandoning the venue already.

The Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, the group that financed the original stadium, still owes $1 billion towards the project.

They aren't scheduled to pay that off until 2056.

The Houston Chronicle broke the news that the Texans' management has "explored the possibility of a new stadium."

Later in the week, the Houston Chronicle published an op-ed tearing this idea apart.

"You don't tear down your house when the living room just needs a little paint," the editorial board wrote.

"Unless, that is, you are an NFL team. NRG, it seems, doesn't have as many luxury suites as the homes of several other teams. Boo-hoo for the billionaires.

"Would taxpayers have to foot the bill for a new stadium? Harris County hasn't even paid off NRG yet.

"Plus, what would we do with yet another empty stadium in that parking lot? Our sky-high taxes are already pricing folks out of their homes.

"Come to think of it, that prime property where NRG sits would be a great spot for new housing that would be affordable to teachers, plumbers, first responders, fast-food workers and the rest of us."

Texans fans share the same opinion as the Chronicle and shared their thoughts on social media.

"Man, taxpayers always get the short end of the stick. A 23-year-old stadium isn't even old," one fan said.

"Rich owners need to pay," another fan said.

"My money is being wasted too much already," a third fan said.

"I think the multibillion dollar corporation should fund their stadium," a fourth fan said.

"I don't understand why the city has to get involved in building a nfl stadium," a fifth fan said.
