GREENSBORO -- A Thomasville man who operated a commercial vehicle at a trucking company has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and reckless driving to endanger after the Tuesday death of a Burlington man he struck on Jan. 31, according to a news release from the Greensboro Police Department.
Zander Lee Humble, 20, charged Tuesday, was piloting a 2016 Autocar Yard Jockey, used to move trailers, in the parking lot of Estes Express on Electra Drive.
Humble hit Kenneth Earl Payne, 70, an Estes employee, as Payne walked through the parking lot on the morning of Jan. 31, according to the GPD.
Payne, who died Tuesday in a local hospital from injuries sustained in the incident, was wearing a high-visibility orange vest and compliant with industrial workplace safety standards when he was struck, police said in a Tuesday news release.
No information was immediately available regarding the date on which Humble will appear in court to answer to the charges.
Payne's death marked the city's third pedestrian fatality this year, the GPD reported.
According to the North Carolina Department of Labor, 217 people died from workplace injuries in N.C. during 2022, the most recent statistics available. And Guilford County saw 19 pedestrian fatalities on its roadways in 2024, according to news reports and police records.
