The Original Broken Yolk Cafe opened in 1979 in Pacific Beach, a San Diego beach community. It has since grown into a Southern California favorite for breakfast, brunch and lunch.
Its extensive menu ranges from healthier fare -- including feta avocado toast with thick-sliced artisan grain bread lightly toasted and topped with fresh avocado, arugula, cherry tomatoes, feta cheese and a balsamic drizzle -- to old classics including huevos rancheros with a grilled corn tortilla topped with two eggs over medium and a homemade ranchero sauce, served with Mexican rice, refried beans and guacamole.
"If you ask foodies why they love the Broken Yolk, they will most likely say, 'Their signature Benedicts and variety of menu options, mimosas (12-ounce size!), homemade sauces, soups and baked goods and, the most important, service," according to its website.
Broken Yolk was featured in 2009 on The Travel Channel's "Man vs. Food."
"Think of us as your daily go-to for hearty breakfasts, boozy brunches and easy lunches. We believe you can taste the difference when you cook from scratch, so we make our sauces, batters and biscuits fresh, and crack our own cage-free eggs. We're here to make your day better, whether you're in the mood for a classic or one of our over-the-top specialties," according to its website.
The Fraser family opened its first Mexican food restaurant, Don Jose Mexican Restaurant, in Orange on July 7, 1972.
"The food was simple, fresh and authentic, made by expert cooks from Jalisco, Mexico," according to the Rodrigo's website.
The founders were Roderick and Patricia Fraser. "Rod" was a World War II veteran pilot from Oregon and Patricia was from Orange.
Restaurants became the family business in the 1960s. Their oldest son, Rick, helped open locations throughout Orange County and the Inland Empire.
In 2017, the Fraser family brought all the Don Jose restaurants under their new existing brand, Rodrigo's Mexican Grill -- a tribute to Rod.
The Sunday Champagne Brunch runs 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Menu options include chilaquiles, carnitas hash, huevos rancheros, huevos con chorizo and carne asada y huevos. Hot corn or flour tortillas are served upon request with the entrée. Champagne is complimentary.
Toast Kitchen & Bakery Partner Ed Lee says Toast is a brunch restaurant with Asian influence. The restaurant has been open for seven years.
"We have been voted by several magazines as top 10 best brunch," he said. "We've also been voted by Yelp as top three in California. We make the best ube French toast."
Toast's ube French toast includes brioche, crème brûlée batter, ube pastry cream, blueberry, mango coconut and blueberry sauce, coconut feuilletine and ube whipped cream.
Lee, who co-owns Wahoo's Fish Taco, also founded Rooster Cafe in Costa Mesa.
"I wanted to do more community work, so that is why I sold Rooster and opened Toast," he said. "At Toast, the team is about giving. We also have a sister restaurant called Tableau in South Coast Plaza. We donate to several nonprofit organizations."
Charities Toast gives to include CASA, Girls Inc., Olive Crest and The Mix.
