Stores like Sam's Club seeing panic buying of toilet paper

TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- Many box stores across the country are dealing with something last seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.

People are panic buying toilet paper. This includes big stores like Walmart and Sam's Club.

This comes amid the ongoing port strikes across the country. The fear is the strikes will lead to a supply shortage of items like toilet paper.

However, experts assure the public the strike will not directly affect the availability of toilet paper.

"The overwhelming majority -- more than 90% by some estimates -- of US toilet paper consumption comes from domestic factories," CNN reported.

"Nothing. They didn't have any toilet paper, any paper towels and they were out of certain other things, too," Lorrie Stokes of Pontotoc said on Wednesday outside Sam's Club in Tupelo.

Kellie O'Donnell of Hamilton, Alabama, jokingly thought, "Here we go again!"

She's referring to the same panic buying that happened at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

"There will likely be some shortages caused by the port strike, but mostly for perishable goods for which the US market depends on imports. Item one is bananas," CNN reported.
