UPDATE: Appalachian Power says power has now been restored to 90 percent of affected customers

Oct. 3 -- Appalachian Power is continuing to make progress in the restoration of electricity to thousands across the region who are still in the dark.

As of Thursday morning, electricity had been restored to 90 percent of the 282,000 people who lost power on Sept. 27 as a result of the remnants of Hurricane Helene.

However, another 28,500 customers were still without power Thursday morning.

George Porter, director of communications for Appalachian Power, said 7,360 line crew personnel from multiple states are now helping with the restoration efforts. He said 5,000 of those personnel were working Thursday in the Southwest Virginia and southern West Virginia area.

Some residents in the region who are still without electricity have reported that other houses just up or down the road from them have electricity and they don't.

Porter said this is because those houses with electricity are on a different circuit.

"For communities, everyone is broken up in different circuits," Porter said. "The people behind you might be in a region where there isn't any street damage."
