Brazos Valley athlete of the week honor roll for Feb. 17-23

Here's The Eagle's athlete of the week honor roll for the week of Feb. 17-23.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

S Arianna Nacianceno, Madisonville

Nacianceno earned the athlete of the week award after guiding the Madisonville girls soccer team to a 2-0 win over Palestine. The freshman striker had both of the team's goals in last Thursday's win in a matchup of the district's unbeaten.

Madisonville will look to stay undefeated in District 16-4A as the Lady Mustangs are at Trinity at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

It came down to the wire for Nacianceno as she came into the final hour of voting in second. She received 36.8% of the vote and 775 of the 2,104 votes.

St. Joseph girls basketball junior Leah Hurley (34.3%, 721 votes) was right behind Nacianceno in second, while Lexington softball sophomore pitcher Taylor Akin (12.8%, 270 votes) was in third.

A&M Consolidated baseball senior shortstop Gage Boyd (9.1%, 191 votes), Navasota softball junior Madelyn Nobles (6.6%, 138 votes) and Rudder boys soccer sophomore Javier Santos (0.43%, 9 votes) rounded out the poll.

OTHER NOMINEES FROM THE WEEK

Taariq Whitfield, Mumford: Whitfield impressed for the Mumford boys basketball team in its two playoff games. The senior averaged a double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds to lead Mumford to the regional semifinals for the first time since 2022.

Chloee Lockett, A&M Consolidated: Lockett helped the A&M Consolidated girls basketball team go toe to toe with No. 9 Georgetown in the regional semifinals. The junior had 11 points, four steals and three assists.

Emma Loehr, Mumford: Loehr was a strikeout machine for the Mumford softball team. In two games, she combined for 18 strikeouts in just five innings of work against Axtell and Holland.

Coaches and team statisticians can make nominations for athlete of the week by sending them to Sports@theeagle.com by noon on Sunday with relevant game stats from the past week. The nominees can be from any sport that is currently in-season.
