WISE, Va. (WJHL) -- The Health Wagon announced on Wednesday that Tommy Dingus, 66, a paramedic, educator, and one of the organization's longest-standing supporters, has died.
"We are devastated by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Tommy Dingus," said Dr. Teresa Tyson, president & CEO of the Health Wagon, in a release. "For decades, Tommy gave selflessly to this region as a paramedic, saving lives and offering comfort in moments of crisis. His compassion and steadfast service will forever be part of the fabric of our community and The Health Wagon family."
A release from the Health Wagon said Dingus began working with the organization in the 90s, hosting health fairs for underserved communities throughout the Clintwood, Clinchco, Wise and Hurley areas.
The events reportedly brought care to thousands of Southwest Virginia residents. The release said that during these events, Dingus would teach emergency preparedness, transport equipment, assist with logistics and offer a shoulder for patients to lean on.
"Tommy was more than a paramedic -- he was part of the Health Wagon family," said Paula Hill Collins, vice president/chief clinical director of the Health Wagon. "His mentorship, his presence at every turn, and his unwavering heart for this community will be felt for generations. We are heartbroken at the loss of our colleague and dear friend, Tommy Dingus. He was a hero whose courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication touched countless lives across our community. His legacy of service will forever remain a part of The Health Wagon family, and we are deeply grateful for the years he spent saving lives and bringing comfort to those in their most critical moments."
According to the release, Dingus helped certify "nearly every" Health Wagon staff member in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
A service honoring Dingus' life and legacy will be held Friday at UVA Wise's Convocation Center. The family will receive friends beginning at 4 p.m. with the service following at 7 p.m., officiated by Pastor Danny Smith.
All Health Wagon clinics will close early on Friday so staff may attend and pay tribute.
The Health Wagon said that in place of flowers, Dingus' family requested donations be made to a scholarship fund for his son, Brantlee, at New Peoples Bank, 5448 Wise-Norton Rd., Norton, VA 24273.
