Lehigh Valley products Andre Reed and Mike Guman, who both went on to outstanding football careers in college and the NFL, are in a class of 12 athletes who will be inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Drexelbrook Event Center.
The event center is located at 4700 Drexelbrook Drive in Drexel Hill, Delaware County.
The state hall of fame's annual induction ceremony and dinner will begin at 6 p.m.
Reed and Guman will follow Matt Millen and Larry Miller who were part of the last year's induction class when the event was in the Lehigh Valley.
Reed, the former standout at Dieruff High School and Kutztown University who went on to a Hall of Fame career in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills, and Guman, the Bethlehem Catholic athlete who went on to play for Joe Paterno at Penn State and in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams, are in an induction class with former major league baseball players Mike Mussina and Jake Daubert.
The class also includes college basketball coaches Jay Wright and Bruce Parkhill, NFL players Bo Orlando and Jim Braxton, NBA player Dave Popson, amateur golfer Carol Semple Thompson, Philadelphia sportswriter and TV analyst Ray Didinger and paralympian skier Stephanie Jallen.
Reed, a quarterback in high school, set nine Kutztown receiving records before being taken in the fourth round of the 1985 NFL Draft by Buffalo. He went on to play 15 consecutive seasons with the Bills and was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014.
Reed, who recently had a guest appearance on the Golden Bachelorette on ABC, finished his NFL career with 951 receptions, 13,198 receiving yards and 87 TD receptions. He was a key part of four straight AFC Bills' championship teams.
Guman, who was also a 1,000-point scorer in basketball at Becahi and a top prospect in baseball where he was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 13th round of the 1976 amateur draft, chose football and was a Penn State running back. As a Nittany Lion, he was best known for carrying the ball on the goal line against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1, 1979, a game that decided the national championship.
He was stopped on a hard hit by Alabama linebacker Barry Krauss. The collision knocked Krauss' helmet loose and caused Krauss to briefly black out. The photo of the play was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Guamn was selected in the sixth round of the 1980 draft by the defending NFC champion Los Angeles Rams. He played nine seasons with the Rams, used primarily as a blocking fullback after the Rams drafted Eric Dickerson in 1983. He ended his career with 1,286 rushing yards, 1,433 receiving yards and 16 TDs.
Tickets for the event cost $75. Checks made out to Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame Delco should be mailed to Kelley Simone, 421 Willowgate Lane, Media, PA 19063.
