Live updates: Nebraska, USC tied after opening quarter as Husker offense held in check

LOS ANGELES -- Nebraska's pregame prayer at midfield sparked a tussle between the Huskers and USC's players and coaches in Los Angeles.

The skirmish occurred approximately two hours before kickoff of the 3 p.m. CST matchup between the two. The game will be broadcast on Fox.

The Huskers (5-4, 2-4) are coming out of a bye week, looking to end their three-game losing streak and clinch bowl eligibility with a sixth win.

The Trojans (4-5, 2-5) also had a bye last week, and most recently lost 26-21 to Washington. In response, USC head coach Lincoln Riley will start UNLV transfer quarterback Jayden Maiava over former starter Miller Moss.

FIRST QUARTER

4 plays, 40 yards: USC's offense continued its groove, hitting Marks out of the backfield for a 12-yard gain then completing another pass for nine yards. Marks then broke off a 12-yard run before Maiava found Makai Lemon for seven yards to end the quarter. The Trojans start the second with 2nd-and-3 at Nebraska's 46-yard line.

5 plays, 21 yards: A 9-yard run earned a first down for Nebraska, and he earned two more touches to set up 3rd-and-4. Raiola scrambled, but slid short of the first down rather than attempting to take on the multiple USC defenders. The Huskers initially lined up to go for it, but opted to punt.

9 plays, 65 yards: Maiava went to Branch behind the line of scrimmage on the next play after the interception, and the receiver lost three yards thanks to Marques Buford Jr.'s monster hit. A solid run set up 3rd and medium, where Maiava connected for a conversion past midfield while getting hit. Quinten Joyner earned three straight rushes to earn another first down, but Marks was stopped by Nash Hutmacher for a 3-yard loss to slow momentum on the ground. USC then went to the air, as Maiava threw up a jump ball while being pushed to the sideline and it was caught at the 6-yard line. One play later, Branch broke a tackle and found the endzone on a screen.

3 plays, -1 yards: Marks was stopped for a loss of one, and Maiava's dangerous pass on the next play fell incomplete. On third down, the quarterback threw an interception right to cornerback and former Trojan Ceyair Wright, who returned it for a Husker touchdown.

6 plays, 14 yards: Jahmal Banks earned back-to-back targets to start Nebraska's drive, catching the second for eight yards. Dante Dowdell powered through a tackle for a first down on 3rd-and-short. However, the Huskers punted after a Dylan Raiola run for no gain, short catch and incompletion.

6 plays, 12 yards: Nebraska won the coin toss, but deferred. USC started with the ball, and flipped it to Zachariah Branch on the first play for six yards. After an incompletion, Jayden Maiava found Woody Marks for a first down. Marks was then stuffed for no gain on his first carry, and two incompletions ended the drive. The Husker drive will start at their own 12-yard line.

PREGAME

The Huskers are debuting a new offensive coordinator -- Dana Holgorsen was among the first off the team bus wearing black Nebraska warmups and without a hat.

The Trojans will start a new quarterback in Jayden Maiava.

Tinseltown tension continued to rise two and a half hours before kickoff. Nebraska players and a few USC coaches and players tussled for a few minutes at midfield as Trojans took exception to the visitors crowding on the 'SC' logo.

The Huskers were conducting their usual pregame team prayer at the center of the field, though it was at least the second time under coach Matt Rhule that the opponent misunderstood -- or chose to take negatively -- the action. Colorado was the other last season in Boulder.

It is currently 63° in L.A. ahead of kickoff.
