Biggest opposition for rumored Saints target just fired their coach

Biggest opposition for rumored Saints target just fired their coach

Alongside Aaron Glenn, Mike Vrabel has been heavily connected to the New Orleans Saints head coach search. Unfortunately for the Saints and all the fans hoping for Vrabel, the biggest competition for him just opened up.

The New England Patriots disappointingly fired Jerod Mayo after just one season at the helm. The disappointment has nothing to do with the potential impact on the Saints. It's all about the lack of true opportunity given to Mayo to build a winner.

How it impacts the Saints is, the speculation is New England opened up their job with eyes focused on Vrabel. The New York Jets interviewed Vrabel last week. SNY Jets reporter Connor Hughes said there was optimism around Vrabel to New York "as long as the New England job doesn't open."

That just happened. The truth is the Saints may not have been able to land Vrabel regardless. New Orleans isn't the most attractive vacancy. However, the odds become increasingly stacked against them with the New England's latest move. Vrabel is connected to the Patriots similarly to how Glenn is connected to the Saints. He played in Foxborough from 2001 to 2008 and won three Super Bowls there. The former Tennessee Titans head coach and Cleveland Browns consultant has been a hot commodity on the interview circuit. Let's see if he ends up in New England again after all.
