3 to be inducted into track and field hall
Mackenize Pierce, a former runner at Forsyth Country Day, will be inducted into the North Carolina High School Track and Field and Cross Country Hall of Fame on Feb. 1 during the Mondo Elite High School Invitational at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
Pierce is one of the most accomplished distance runners in state history.
Pierce still holds the record for the outdoor 800 meters (2:06.67), a record that she set in 2003. She is a two-time North Carolina Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year (2003, 2004) and is a 16-time state champion in the 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, 1600 meters and the 4x400 meter relay.
This will be the sixth class inducted into the hall. A statewide committee of 22 track and field and cross country coaches, both current and former, officials, and media members who cover the sport nominated and elected the class.
Craig Longhurst and David Shannon, who have boosted participation for indoor track in North Carolina by building and operating JDL Fast Track, will also be inducted with this year's class.
Shannon built the facility in 2012 and Longhurst has been managing the facility and events since, which includes high school indoor state championships and numerous college events.
