CINCINNATI (WXIX) -- Runners, walkers, and motorcyclists gathered at The Banks on Saturday for the annual DAV 5K, which benefits disabled veterans.
As one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for veterans, the Disabled American Veterans hosts its 12th annual DAV 5K race to raise money for our injured heroes.
"It's a great way to thank Veterans it's a great way for the Cincinnati community to come together and just coalesce around this community of people who have served and sacrificed," Spokesperson for DAV Dan Clare said.
According to DAV's website, the organization provides free lifetime support for veterans and their families in whatever capacity they need help.
"It supports all of DAVs free services and programs for veterans that covers employment, benefits, transportation to and from medical appointments so the money we raise here is making a substantive difference in Veterans lives -- helping their families, helping their caregivers," Clare said.
Participants joined the race in person or virtually. The money raised will help veterans in all branches of the military through various services.
Clare explains that about one-third of the participants are veterans, and the rest are residents to show their support.
"It's just great to see everybody come together, especially the community in the world we live in now. You just get to take a deep breath, everybody's supporting each other, and we do what we need to do for the Vets," Clare said.
The nonprofit organization is expected to raise about $500,000. Participant Brandon Henry says it is important to let veterans know there are resources for them and that it is okay to ask for help.
"Some people are proud and it's just knowing that you can ask for help, there's people there that's willing to help you and you don't have to go through anything alone, there's resources out there and if you need it, just ask," Henry said.
