Man nearly killed after Nedrow home invasion

NEDROW, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- A 33-year-old man is behind bars after breaking into two homes and attacking both a 14-year-old and a 40-year-old man who was then taken to the hospital. The home invasions happened early Monday morning, Sept. 30, on Stonefield Road and Bailey Drive in Nedrow.

A Nedrow man says he's lucky to be alive.

"I think he was here to kill us, to be honest with you," said Steven Martin of Bailey Drive.

Martin says he was trying to protect his girlfriend and her 4-year-old daughter during an early morning home invasion on Monday.

"I just woke up to my girlfriend screaming because there's a man standing over her with the back of a toilet lid ready to hit her," said Martin.

The terrifying incident happened just after 5 a.m. at Martin's home on Bailey Drive. Ring cam video shows 33-year-old Raysean Broadwater lighting up what appears to be a cigarette before making his way inside Martin's home.

"I jumped out of bed and I believe that's when he hit me in the forehead with it and I got knocked down on the ground," said Martin.

But Martin says he did everything he could to fight off the man he believes was there to kill him and his family.

"I tackled him. I wrested him and I just knew I couldn't give up," said Martin.

Martin said Broadwater had taken a shovel and a poker that was placed in front of his fireplace to use as his weapons.

"He had two weapons in the bedroom already. Then he went back and got the toilet lids. So he planned this out pretty good I guess, and he wasn't here to rob. My wallet was right next to where he broke in with money in it, and that's all still there," Martin said.

Before taking off, Martin said Broadwater started shouting bizzare remarks to him and his family.

"He just said, 'I'm sorry, this is the wrong house. I got the wrong house.' I'm like, 'No you don't,'" said Martin.

Eventually, Broadwater ran off.

Martin was rushed to the hospital where he underwent surgery for a skull fracture. He's now recovering at the home he's lived in with his family for less than a year.

"We've been here literally three months, and we talked to some of the neighbors and they said this has never happened here before," said Martin.

But, Martin isn't alone. Deputies say Broadwater also attacked a 14-year-old male at a home on Stonefield Road, less than two miles away. He also tried breaking into Savannah Montulli's home who lives just a few houses down from Stonefield Road.

"It looks like he's putting gloves on. He knew what he was doing. He wasn't coming to rob me. He was coming to hurt us," said Montulli.

Ring cam video shows Broadwater trying to break into Montulli's home while playing with the doorknob, looking inside her house.

Montulli says she thankfully made sure to lock up her doors and windows, but is having a difficult time sleeping at night since Monday.

Broadwater is charged with burglary, assault with intent to cause serious injury with a weapon and acting to injure a child. He's currently being held in the Onondaga County Justice Center.

A GoFund me has been set up for Martin's family as they recover from this horrific event.
