OPD identified suspect and victim in shooting involving officers

Omaha police identified the man and woman shot in an incident involving officers.Previous coverage in the video aboveThe incident happened in the area of 43rd and Frances streets on Wednesday evening.There was a report of a man and a woman fighting inside the building.Upon arrival, officers heard gunfire and a woman screaming. When officers went inside, they could hear more gunfire coming from a closet.OPD said police opened the closet door, and two officers fired their weapons.The woman, identified as 38-year-old Veronica Villa, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the man, identified as 37-year-old Rafael Crespo, was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition.Police said a handgun was found inside the closet near Crespo.Through court records KETV NewsWatch 7 learned that Villa filed for a protection order against Crespo back in 2022.Detailed in that report, Villa said the two divorced in 2016 and she listed three incidents where Crespo would not let her leave and in one of those incidents Crespo allegedly assaulted Villa.
