The La Crosse County Medical Examiner's Office said Friday that remains found in June 2023 along the Mississippi River have been identified as those of James B. Mummer.
Mummer was 17 years old when he was reported missing to La Crosse police on Sept. 6, 2018. He was last seen near the Mississippi River on the South Side of La Crosse.
On June 20, 2023, La Crosse police and sheriff's deputies as well as the La Crosse County Dive Team responded to the report of skeletal human remains discovered in the area of Running Slough.
"An autopsy was conducted and revealed there weren't any signs of injury or trauma, and it is believed the remains were in the river for an extended period," according to a press release.
The medical examiner's office, with assistance from the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine in Arizona, was able to identify the remains as Mummer.
