Pedro León, Trey Cabbage power Astros' Space Cowboys to championship

The Sugar Land Space Cowboys, the Houston Astros' Triple-A affiliate, was the best team in the Pacific Coast League all season, winning both the first half and second half while posting 93 wins, the most in all of minor league baseball. They proved they were the best when it counted Wednesday night, beating the Reno Aces 5-2 at Constellation Field, completing a sweep of the PCL championship series.

It's the Space Cowboys' first PCL title since joining affiliated baseball in 2021.

Sugar Land, which routed Reno 14-2 in Game 1 on Tuesday, jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a Pedro León home run in the first inning Wednesday and never trailed.

León and Trey Cabbage, who both spent time in the Astros' big league outfield this season, each drove in two runs in the win. Cooper Hummel added a home run, going 3-for-4.

Miguel Ullola, who was promoted from Double-A Corpus Christi just a week ago, shut out Reno for four innings, allowing just two hits.

After León put the Space Cowboys up 2-0, Sugar Land added to the lead with back-to-back homers from Cabbage and Hummel to make it 4-0 in the third inning.

After the Aces, who are part of the Arizona Diamondbacks farm system, got to reliever Seth Martinez to cut the lead to 4-2, Cabbage added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Forrest Whitley, Luis Contreras and Wander Suero each pitched a scoreless inning of relief to shut it down.

The Space Cowboys now will head to Las Vegas for a game against the Triple-A International League champion on Saturday night. The International League series the Columbus Clippers (Guardians) and the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals) is tied at a game apiece.
