In Danville, E.C. Glass' season came to a close at the hands of a familiar opponent in GW-Danville, which earned a 24-7 victory in the Region 4D quarterfinal round on Friday.
GW, the region's top seed, received rushing touchdowns from quarterback Nehemiah Cabell, a four-year starter who bruised the Hilltoppers with two touchdowns when the two teams faced off in Week 3 this September.
GW's Antonio Matos capitalized off two Hilltoppers mistakes with an interception midway through the fourth quarter and fumble return.
Ace Thornton had a touchdown catch for Glass (5-6) which had squeaked into the playoffs as the bottom seed by half a point and was hoping for an upset.
It was the 102nd meeting between the two storied programs. GW moves on to face No. 4 Salem in the second round.
Liberty Christian 42, Broadway 14
At Liberty Christian, top-seeded LCA struggled to fend off pesky No. 8 Broadway, at least in the first quarter. The two teams were tied at 7 at the end of the first 12 minutes before the Bulldogs turned on the jets and sped way for a 28-point victory in the Regin 3C quarterfinals.
LCA running back Gideon Davidson rushed for 103 yards and three touchdowns on 23 attempts and freshman quarterback Tyler Jackson put together the most complete performance of his young high school career, completing 11 of 13 passes for 204 yards and tossing two touchdowns.
With the score knotted at 7 early in the second quarter, Jackson hit Davidson (44 receiving yards) with a 29-yard touchdown pass, giving LCA a lead it would never relinquish. Jackson also threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to James Deyo 45 seconds after the game began.
Deyo finished with 122 receiving yards on four catches and also scored on an 80-yard run.
LCA (10-0) faces Heritage (9-2) in the second round on Friday. The fourth-seeded Pioneers defeated No. 5 Rustburg 26-7 in another quarterfinal game.
The Bulldogs held Broadway (7-4) to 111 yards of total offense. Quarterback Zecharia Stuhlmiller completed 10 of 14 passes for 71 yards and threw a touchdown pass. LCA picked him off twice. Broadway's Uriah Rutan scored the game's final touchdown on a 94-yard kickoff return.
LCA finished with 450 yards of total offense once week after it won the Seminole District regular-season title by defeating Jefferson Forest in the regular-season finale.
Floyd County 20, Appomattox 15
In Floyd, Appomattox's dream of a first-round upset was denied as the Raiders lost in the opening round of the playoffs for the first time since 2014.
The fourth-seeded Buffaloes (6-5) rumbled out to a 10-0 lead and led 13-7 at half. Appomattox, the Region 2C's No. 5 seed, went down by 13 in the third quarter before narrowing the deficit to five, but could get no closer.
Appomattox lost its first six games of the season, but rallied into the playoff field by winning four straight to close the season.
The last time the Raiders were bounced this early in the postseason, they went 6-5 and lost to Lee by six points in the first round. The next year, they went on to win the first of three straight state titles.
Gretna 34, Nelson 14
In Gretna, the Hawks put an end to Nelson's dream campaign, downing the Governors in the first round of the Region 2C playoffs.
Nelson (5-5) had advanced to the postseason for the first time in 22 years and earned the region's No. 6 seed. But No. 3 Gretna (8-3) went up early and led 25-0 at halftime. The Governors scored in the third quarter.
Gretna faces No. 2 Radford (8-3) in the second round, setting up a potential thriller. Radford defeated No. 7 Patrick County 34-14 on Friday.
Brunswick 33, William Campbell 12
In Lawrenceville, the season came to an end for William Campbell (1-10), which had advanced to the playoffs because Region 1B only featured seven teams this season.
No. 2 Brunswick (7-4) advances to face No. 3 Buffalo Gap in the second round. Buffalo Gap defeated Franklin 44-6 in another quarterfinal game Friday.
Also in Region 1B, Altavista found out its opponent for the second round (the Colonels received a first-round bye as the region's top seed). The Colonels will face No. 4 Sussex Central, which defeated Surry County 34-28 in a quarterfinal game Friday.
