Lions learn history of hemp

LINDA GORDON, ENTERPRISE LIONS

Did you know that early drafts of the Declaration of Independence were written on hemp? Or that in the 1700's all British colonies were required to grow hemp? Hemp originated in central Asia and was in daily use for pottery, food, and medicine as far back as 8000 BCE.

The Vikings brought hemp to northern Europe around 800 A.D. and European explorers introduced it to South America in the 1500's. Margo Battenberg, from Canna Raised CBD, spoke to the Enterprise Lions Club recently about the history of hemp and its many beneficial uses.

Hemp has been used as a source of fiber for everything from paper to sails and has long been known for its medicinal properties. Hemp was widely grown in the United States until the 20th century when the paper industry feared that hemp would replace trees as a source of paper. In 1937 a tax was imposed on the production of hemp, but World War II saw a resurgence in the growth of hemp for use as material for ropes and canvas since the U.S. could not buy the product from southeast Asia.

The Hemp Acres USA website states that "In 1970, the Controlled Substances Act listed 'marijuana' as a Schedule 1 narcotic and made no distinction between marijuana and hemp. For almost 28 years, the regulation on hemp and marijuana continued with full force until 1998. In that year, hemp seed and oil were imported as edible/food products. The seed and fiber of the hemp plant was exempted from the definition of marijuana and thus those products could be imported and sold in the US."

In 2018 Congress legalized hemp for a variety of uses and it was no longer considered a "controlled substance." Hemp, when planted, will cleanse the soil of impurities and toxic substances. Hemp was planted at Chernobyl after the nuclear disaster there. Battenberg noted that when hemp is first planted in a field, it cannot be used for food or medicinal purposes for several years because as it cleans the soil it also absorbs the chemicals and toxic substances present in the ground through a process called "phytoremediation." She stated that for this reason hemp that has been treated with pesticides or other harmful chemicals should never be used for human consumption. Interestingly, plants that have been used for phytoremediation can later be burned as a biofuel.

Battenberg reported that the products sold at Canna Raised CBD have been carefully sourced to ensure their safety for human consumption. CBD stands for cannabidiol, a chemical in the Cannabis sativa plant, also known as cannabis or hemp. One specific form of CBD is approved as a drug in the U.S. for seizures. Over 80 chemicals, known as cannabinoids, have been found in the Cannabis sativa plant. Over the years, research into uses for CBD products has improved the formulas and has resulted in a wide variety of products that can be used to improve sleep and cognitive function, relieve pain and inflammation, support the immune system and weight loss, and help both humans and pets deal with stress.

Battenberg has worked in the medical profession, and she says her faith in the products they sell comes for personal experience and a lot of research. Her husband Fred was a Special Forces soldier, and when he retired from the military, he experienced significant back pain from injuries sustained on active duty. Surgery to relieve his pain failed, and doctors wanted to prescribe a regimen of pain medication as an alternative to more surgery. After trying a CBD product for five days and experiencing significant relief from pain, he was sold. Thus began their journey to offer quality CBD products to the public.

At first, they offered the products for sale online, but clients often did not know exactly what product would work best for them. Then Margo knew they needed a "brick and mortar" store where they could consult with clients in person to determine the best product for their needs.

Incidentally, our bodies have their own endocannabinoid system, meaning we already produce cannabidiol, but not enough to really be helpful. Taking a CBD product daily actually boosts our own body's production of cannabidiol, which can help reduce inflammation, calm our anxiety and stress, and help us sleep better.

Canna Raised CBD produces quality and safe cannabidiol products that come in a variety of forms. Tinctures are administered in small drops under the tongue; gummies and capsules can be taken orally to boost overall health and wellness. Topical lotions and ointments can be used to relieve joint pain and inflammation. CBDa and CBGa have been proven to block Covid from entering our cells, so if you want to boost your immune system or need help recovering from long Covid, these products may help.

In addition to CBD products, Canna Raised CBD carries non-CBD supplements. Some physicians or professional situations may not allow someone to use a CBD product, so Battenberg noted that they offer alternatives.
