DeWITT -- Phoenix and Jameville-DeWitt were winners on the gridiron Friday as Section III determined champions for larger and smaller schools opting out of its standard playoff and scheduling system.
Phoenix defeated Sherburne-Earlville 48-25 in the Class C2 game first on Jamesville-DeWitt's turf, and South Jefferson beat the host school 49-22 in the the nightcap, the Class B2 final.
Phoenix quarterback Tallen Prior threw four touchdown passes before halftime and ran for two scores after, leading the Firebirds (7-2) to a fifth consecutive victory to finish the season.
Phoenix, a 48-25 winner Thursday, had previously beaten Sherburne-Earlville's Timberwolves (4-6) 38-13 in an Oct. 11 home game that started the Firebirds' win streak.
Prior threw two touchdown passes to Eddie Kelly to put Phoenix up 14-0 after one quarter.
Nick Hull ran for the first two of his three touchdowns in the second quarter and pulled Sherburne-Earlville within on point at 14-13. A 25-yad scoring pass from Prior to Jayden Thomas extended the Phoenix lead, and the Firebirds were able to strike again before halftime.
Sherburne-Earlville was driving in the final minute and fumbled. Phoenix came up with the ball and ran it back to the 10-yard line. Prior passed to Thomas again on the next play and the Firebirds went up 26-13 with five seconds remaining on the clock.
The teams traded touchdowns early in the second half with Sherburne-Earlville pulling within seven points twice. Hull ran 47 yards for his third touchdown, and senior lineman Landon Andrade added a 5-yard touchdown run.
Jayden Parker added a 17-yard touchdown run to Prior's 1- and 15-yard runs. Prior went over 1,000 rushing yards for the season in the win, and the two touchdown run gave him 11 to go with 14 touchdown passes.
The South Jefferson Spartans won Class B2 for the second year in row by beating Jamesville-DeWitt 49-22 on the Red Rams' home field.
The Spartans defeated Mexico Academy 48-21 in last fall's B2 final.
