Kirk Herbstreit Predicts Upset in Historic College Football Rivalry

A weekly tradition in college football that fans either love or hate depending on the result is when ESPN's "College GameDay" crew makes their weekly selections for the biggest games.

While there weren't many upset calls on Saturday, Kirk Herbstreit did feel bold enough to pick a couple. He not only picked the Virginia Tech Hokies to take down the No. 23 Clemson Tigers, but he also picked an upset for a rivalry game that is being played for the first time since 2021 and for the 84th time overall.

In Salt Lake City, Utah, the Utah Utes are hosting the No. 9 BYU Cougars in a meeting between two teams who are having completely different seasons than initially expected. The Utes came into the season as the favorites to win the Big 12, but are currently fighting to stay above .500 as they sit with a 4-4 record.

As for BYU, they were projected to end up near the bottom of the conference, and have yet to lose a game this season, and are squarely in the mix for the College Football Playoff. Even despite the fact that the Utes have been struggling mightily this season and are 3.5-point underdogs, Herbstreit was the lone analyst to pick them to win.

A win would give Utah their first since Sept. 21 and would also obviously hand BYU their first of the season.

There may not be a program in the Big 12 that needs a win more than the Utes, so Utah cans are certainly hoping Herbstreit is correct. The Utes have historically dominated the rivalry, posting a 51-29-4 record against the Cougars all-time.
