Photoshop (Beta) users can now try Photoshop's Generative Workspace, an exciting feature that's set to become a cornerstone of the Creative Cloud. Any Creative Cloud subscriber can access Adobe's beta apps -- these are simply the beta versions of any Adobe app -- through the Creative Cloud hub.

Generative Workspace is one of the top AI features announced at Adobe Max 2024, and will be the new home of your AI-generated imagery and files. Here's why I think it's going to be Adobe's most valuable feature.

1 Generative AI Organization

Adobe is pretty good with its file management options. Not only does it provide cloud-based storage with Creative Cloud subscriptions, but Adobe programs like Bridge and Frame.io allow for helpful and organized file management.

The Generative Workspace expected in Photoshop will work as file management for your AI-generated images. It's not entirely clear if it will be implemented across other Adobe software, but I expect it will. This would mean you can access generated images made in other Adobe programs regardless of where you open Generative Workspace.

✕ Remove Ads

Not only does Generative Workspace store and present your generated images, but also the text prompts and other aspects you applied to generate them. This is helpful for recreating a past style or result, as you don't have to save your prompts anywhere to keep a record of them.

2 A Library of All Your Past Generated Images

It's easy to lose your generated images from past projects, especially when you choose one variation and then move on with it, you'll often lose the other variations. Although you may not have chosen any of the extra variations for the project at hand, they may come in handy in future projects.

✕ Remove Ads

Generative Workspace stores every image of your AI generations' past, so you can access them again at any point in the future. And they're all stored in one central location, so you don't need to open old projects to find them all.

3 Potential Cross-Platform Access

Although Generative Workspace has only been announced for Photoshop Beta -- with the knowledge that once it's approved it will be in Photoshop -- it's a long-term expectation that Generative Workspace will become available across the entire Creative Cloud.

Think of all the Adobe software where you can now generate images: Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom, Adobe Express, Acrobat -- via Adobe Express -- and more if we include mobile and web applications. Adobe is also bringing AI video generation to Premiere Pro and Firefly, which is already in beta at the time of writing.

✕ Remove Ads

Being able to access all your generated imagery from Adobe products in one place will make a world of difference in time efficiency and productivity. While this hasn't been announced or confirmed by Adobe, it is a realistic expectation.

Adobe announces new tools and features often, and sometimes rolls them out in unexpected ways.

4 High-Quality Generated Results

As with all of Adobe's AI-generated imagery, the quality is second to none. Generative Workspace is using Adobe Firefly 3 during the beta, but by the time it is released for public use, Adobe may already be working on Firefly 4 or higher.

✕ Remove Ads

The quality of Adobe Firefly 3 is unbelievable, in my opinion. I am constantly impressed by the visuals it produces, and you rarely get that "AI-tell" found in many other AI tools. I replicated my smartphone photos with AI, and Adobe Firefly 3 gave me the best results.

5 Variety of Prompt Input and Batch Production

Adobe has always offered three or four image variations in any of its generative AI tools across the board. Generative Workspace offers four variations per prompt and can produce up to 20 variations, which is great for batch production.

To increase batch production and keep your productivity high, you can use Generative Workspace to pump out AI images even while previous ones are still generating. There's no wait time except the current generation time.

✕ Remove Ads

It's also a great place for tweaking your prompts. There are many customizable options within Adobe's Generative Workspace, and it works so quickly that it's easy to change small variations of the prompt, filters, textures, styles, and much more to fit your ideal vision.

If you're someone who uses generative AI in Adobe programs often, then the ability to customize your generated images can be valuable.

You can easily add and edit variables for each prompt by typing adjectives in square brackets within your prompt. For example:

"Dinosaur in [pink, orange, green, purple] dress holding a [balloon, handbag, football] while dancing in the rain." ✕ Remove Ads

Using the variations in your prompt will produce dozens of images, fast. You can change almost anything in the image, from individual elements to art styles or textures.

While there is no set timeline for Generative Workspace to be implemented publicly into Adobe Photoshop or other Adobe programs, you can explore it in Photoshop Beta. The beta trial is promising, producing incredible results already. If you're someone who uses a lot of AI imagery in your work, this tool is set to be your new favorite Adobe feature.
