With the Switch on its last legs, Nintendo reported it's latest quarterly earnings and cut its forecast for console sales during the current fiscal year.
Nintendo earned a net income of $711 million on revenues of $3.43 billion for the quarter ending September 30, 2024. Those figures represent massive declines of 60 percent and 34.3 percent, respectively, year-over-year (YOY).
"Unit sales for the entire Nintendo Switch family of systems decreased 31 percent YOY to 4.72 million units," Nintendo revealed in its earning statement. "Unit sales of software decreased 27.6 percent YOY to 70.28 million units ... We have modified the unit sales forecast for the fiscal year, decreasing Nintendo Switch hardware by 1 million to 12.50 million units and software by 5.00 million to 160.00 million units in comparison to the initial forecast."
Of those 4.72 million console sales, Nintendo Switch OLED accounted for 1.26 million units, while the Switch Lite and OG Switch delivered 640,000 and 730,000 units, respectively. Nintendo reported that 9 software titles have sold over 1 million units in its current fiscal year, which runs through March 2025. The Legends of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, with 2.58 million units sold, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with 2.31 million units, are the bestsellers so far. 56.3 percent of Nintendo Switch software titles sold were digital, up 6.1 percentage points YOY.
According to Nintendo, the firm has now sold 146.04 million Switch consoles. If its revised forecast holds, that figure should hit over 158 million units by the end of March, which would make the Switch its most successful hardware product of all time. The Nintendo DS sold 154.02 million units and is currently its bestseller.
Nintendo intends to announce its Switch successor before the end of its fiscal year.
