How long will cold spell continue in SW Florida?

Meet some of the wading birds you can see in Southwest Florida, they include roseate spoonbills, egrets and flamingos

And while frosty conditions won't actually hit the Fort Myers-Naples area, temperatures will dip to the low 40s here, and freeze warnings will likely be issued for the Tampa area and to the north.

A strong cold front hit Southwest Florida over the weekend, dropping daytime temperatures to by about 15 degrees.

Another front is coming through today, and it will cause overnight lows to plummet to 42 degrees, according to Rodney Wynn, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Ruskin, which covers the Fort Myers-Cape Coral area.

"There's another dry front moving through the Southeast, and there's another area of high pressure from Canada," Wynn said. "That's where the cold weather is coming from. It's another front that is not going to bring us any rainfall. But it will be colder still Tuesday and Wednesday morning it will be the coldest point."

NWS is calling for a low of 42 degrees Wednesday morning in Fort Myers, with inland areas like Lehigh Acres expecting even cooler temperatures.

Regardless of how far the temperatures drops, the term "cold front" refers to any low-pressure system that works its way from the mainland United States to Florida during the winter and spring months.

This front will indeed bring cold temperatures, cold for this region anyway.

The typical high for a Dec. 4 is 79 degrees with a low of 59 degrees, according to historical NWS records.

"It looks like the low, coldest will be 42 Wednesday morning, so we're a few degrees away from the record," Wynn said. "The record low for Fort Myers for December 4 is 36 degrees."

Wynn said there is nothing strange about this front and that winter, for weather monitoring agencies, started Sunday.

Cold front on Dec. 4 'not unprecedented'

"It's not unprecedented at all," he said. "We are in our meteorological winter, and that season starts December 1."

Last winter was dominated by an El Nino pattern, which caused more frequent cold fronts and wetter conditions.

A La Nina is expected to kick in soon, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, is calling for below-average rainfall here between now and March.

"We'll start to get some fronts with rain and others won't have rain," Wynn said. "We're still in a neutral to a weak La Nina so that's pretty typical."

Freeze warning will be issued for parts of Florida

Conditions in Naples will be cold for much of this week as well, according to NWS in Miami, which covers the Naples-Marco Island area.

A meteorologist there were unavailable to speak Monday morning, but the NWS online forecast is calling for a low of 45 Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

Overall, Florida is going to experience some of the coldest weather of the year.

"We are going to put out a freeze warning the next couple of nights but that's primarily north of Tampa Bay and won't likely reach the Fort Myers area," Wynn said.
