RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) -- The new head football coach at Riverside City College has some big shoes to fill.
His predecessor is a coaching legend... who also happens to be his dad!
When legendary head football coach Tom Craft retired from Riverside City College (RCC) last year, he likely had no idea he'd be back on the field at RCC just a few months later.
He's no longer the top dog on this team, as he now reports to his son, Kevin Craft, who is the new head football coach for the Tigers.
"I love it. I'm having a ball," said Kevin Craft.
"This is a really tough situation for him. A lot of situations would be 'Don't follow your dad.' Go create your own reputation at another program. This is kind of unique. He knows how it should look," Tom Craft said.
While Tom might not have known he'd be back so soon, he did know he didn't want to fade away entirely.
"I wanted to stay connected in some fashion with the game. I didn't want to just be at home watching TV. I really enjoy the kids and the coaching staff. This is something I always wanted to do, and I hope I don't die with the whistle in my mouth," he said.
Kevin already has six years of head coaching experience elsewhere, but who better a person to continue to learn from than his dad, who has the best record of any junior college head football coach through 30 seasons.
"I don't feel pressure to live up to what he's done in the past, but I feel really fortunate to have the most winningest coach in California community college football as my assistant who can help guide me. He's been in this organization. He knows this school. He knows how things work around here. He's been a great resource for me in the short time I've been the head coach, and it's a blessing that I get to lean on somebody like that," Kevin said.
