At the intersection of Nanticoke Avenue and Main Street in Endicott, a fenced-in lawn surrounds a small lighthouse.
It's in the heart of the village, surrounded by small shops and restaurants, and the nearest body of water to it is the Susquehanna River half a mile down the road.
If you've ever driven by and wondered how this lighthouse ended up where it did, we have the answer.
The Endicott lighthouse, situated on the corner of Nanticoke Avenue and E. Main Street, was originally an Esso gas station.
Broome County Historian Roger Luther explained all Esso gas stations, later known as ExxonMobil, were built with the lighthouse design and were placed up and down the East Coast.
The Endicott lighthouse is believed to have been built in the late 1920s or early 1930s and, according to Press & Sun-Bulletin archives, was used as a scuba shop in 1996. It was more recently used as an office. The building was empty when visited on Wednesday.

Endicott is not the only place to find this peculiar landmark in Broome County. There is another lighthouse, also a remnant of a former Esso station, in Binghamton.
The Binghamton lighthouse, located on the corner of Deforest and Chenango streets, was formerly a deli and a bar after it was a gas station, according to Luther. It now houses Woodfern Florist.
