There is one situation where dots do matter and that is if you use Gmail through work, school, or other organizations. In this case, if you're using the yourdomain.com or yourschool.edu addresses, dots do matter. If this is your situation, contact your Admin to change your address or the dots.But let's return to what could be a major privacy issue. If you own the johnsmith@gmail.com address and someone is sending private information to john.smith@gmail.com because they made a mistake, or are trying to be funny, you'll end up receiving the email and learning more about the person who sent the message than he or she probably wanted you to know.
