Lady Vols basketball coach Kim Caldwell could have her baby "any day now," she said Tuesday.
Caldwell has navigated her first season as Tennessee women's basketball coach while pregnant, which she announced in September. She led the No. 15 Lady Vols (14-2, 2-2 SEC) to a 13-0 start, which was its best start since 2017-18.
Caldwell, 36, said there is a plan in place for when her first child does arrive, but she is not sharing it publicly.
Caldwell's due date is Jan. 20, according to reports, but Tennessee declined to confirm the date. Caldwell did say Tuesday she's due "any day now."
Caldwell did not say who would take over head coaching duties if she has to miss a game due to the arrival of the baby.
The obvious choice would be assistant coach Jenna Burdette, who Caldwell has spent the most time with. Burdette has coached with Caldwell at both her previous stops, starting at Glenville State in 2018.
Caldwell's teams swept their conference regular-season and tournament championships all three seasons Burdette was on her staff at Glenville State (2018-20) and Marshall (2023-24).
This is Caldwell's first child with her husband, Justin, who is the player development coordinator for Tennessee men's basketball.
Caldwell's tenure as the Glenville State women's basketball coach from 2016-23 overlapped with Justin's five years as the Glenville State men's basketball coach from 2018-23. The couple got married in May 2023.
Tennessee plays at home on Thursday against Mississippi State then plays at Vanderbilt in Nashville on Sunday.
The Lady Vols next game after that is on Jan. 23 at Texas.
Legendary Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt had a birth story fit for a legend. Summitt went into labor while pregnant with her only son, Tyler, while on her way to a recruiting visit.
Summitt and longtime assistant Mickie DeMoss were on a flight to Allentown, Pennsylvania, to recruit star point guard Michelle Marciniak. Summitt's water broke when they landed, but Summitt refused to cancel the home visit. She was in active labor in Marciniak's house and the entire two-hour flight back.
Pilots tried to convince Summitt to land early in Virginia, but Summitt refused to have her child anywhere but Knoxville. Summitt made it back to Knoxville and gave birth to Tyler on Sept. 21, 1990.
Tennessee volleyball coach Eve Rackham Watt was pregnant during her first season in 2018. She was restricted from travel in the final month of the season and gave birth to her son, Jude, in November 2018.
Most recently, women's tennis coach Alison Ojeda led the Lady Vols to the national semifinals while 36 weeks pregnant. Ojeda gave birth to her son, Marcus, in July.
Caldwell won't be the first head coach to have a baby during this college basketball season.
Oklahoma State coach Jacie Hoyt gave birth to her first child, a baby girl named Harlow, on Dec. 12. Hoyt is in her third season coaching OSU and returned to the sidelines 10 days later, coaching the Cowgirls to a win over Iowa State.
