Steamy A24 Film Featuring One of Daniel Craig's Best Performances Sets Streaming Release Date

Director Luca Guadagnino and star Daniel Craig's film Queer has found a streaming home and release date. Based on William S. Burroughs' 1985 novella of the same name, Queer sees Craig play a fictionalized version of Burroughs where he falls in love with Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey), a much younger man. Queer earned positive reviews and was one of the Top 10 films of 2024 by the National Board of Review. Craig was nominated for multiple awards for his performance, including The Golden Globes, the Critics' Choice Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Four months after its theatrical release, Queer is finally making its way to streaming. A24 confirmed that Queer will make its streaming debut exclusively on Max in the U.S. on Friday, Mar. 28, 2025. The film will debut on the HBO linear network the following day on Saturday, Mar. 29, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. ET. Queer joins a growing library of A24 titles on Max after a major streaming deal between the companies. Check out the film's official synopsis:

"1950. William Lee, an American expat in Mexico City, spends his days almost entirely alone, except for a few contacts with other members of the small American community. His encounter with Eugene Allerton, an expat former soldier, new to the city, shows him, for the first time, that it might be finally possible to establish an intimate connection with somebody."

Despite positive reviews from critics, particularly around Craig's performance, Queer was shut out of the 97th Academy Awards alongside Guadagnino's other critically acclaimed 2024 film, Challengers. Queer also was a box office disappointment, as it brought in only $4 million worldwide against a reported $50 million budget. With Queer not nominated for any major Oscars, A24 certainly is in no rush to put it out before the awards show, and instead are aiming for a date nearly a month after the Academy Awards.

Max Is a Must-Have Streaming Service Close

With Max having a streaming deal with A24, it has made the platform a must-have streaming service for movie lovers. The Oscar-nominated animated film Flow, which won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Film this year, recently had an impressive streaming debut, which could also happen for Queer. Alongside movies like Juror #2, A24's romantic drama We Live in Time, the horror comedy Your Monsters, and now Queer, Max and the linear network HBO has become a great place for audiences to catch up on some exciting titles in 2024 that might have flown under the radar.

'Challengers' was one of the best-reviewed films of 2024 and seemed like an Oscar contender, but its early-in-the-year release may have hurt it.

Max, a division of Warner Bros. Discovery, also wants Queer on their service as both the film's director and star could be helming a major DC project. Director Luca Guadagnino is reportedly in talks to direct Sgt. Rock, which is based on a WWII DC Comics character who recently appeared in the Max animated series Creature Commandos. Daniel Craig is rumored to be eyed to play the lead role of Sgt. Rock, which would be part of James Gunn's DCU. With Guadagnino and Craig seemingly set to be part of the DC Universe, maybe Warner Bros. could spin comic book fans' excitement into getting them to watch the duo's previous collaboration in Queer.
