"Charlie was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital on Monday to undergo testing related to an upper-body injury sustained during the 4 Nations Face-Off and is currently being evaluated by Boston Bruins Head Team Physician Dr. Peter Asnis. He will not play for Team USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off Championship Game on Thursday at TD Garden. The Boston Bruins will provide further updates on his condition and status as soon as they become available."
McAvoy had two strong games for USA, including a physical battle with Team Canada on Saturday where his hit on Connor McDavid was considered a tone-setter by his teammates.
The defenseman didn't play in the American's 2-1 loss to Team Sweden in the semifinal on Monday. With a spot in the final already clinched, it looked like Coach Mike Sullivan was going to rest McAvoy. But he didn't return to the lineup when Auston Matthews was scratched shortly before puck drop.
Sullivan after the game that he didn't have an update on McAvoy other than he was dealing with an upper-body injury.
Just after midnight, The Boston Globe reported McAvoy was admitted to the hospital.
The Bruins return to practice on Tuesday. McAvoy's status for Saturday's game at TD Garden against the Anaheim Ducks remains unknown.
