Optical illusions play with your brain and have the ability to reveal 'hidden' aspects of your personality.

That's exactly what one woman discovered when her boyfriend accidentally created an optical illusion when drawing an "old man".

She explained how her boyfriend was innocently drawing an 'old man's face' with a big nose and ears - but when she looked at it, she saw something else entirely, reports The Mirror.

Sharing a picture of his drawing on Reddit, she said: "My boyfriend drew an old man but it looks like a dog to me." Commenting on the drawing, one user said: "Aw I like that I can see both! It's like that saying about how dogs and their owners resemble each other. What a fun design."

Another user added: "I saw an old man first. It reminds me of old cartoon characters that had over exaggerated proportions."

A third user said: "I saw the old man first, profile view. But I can see the dog, kind of an overhead sideview. I agree. Pretty cool." One more user added: "Looks like an old ogre to me."

Commenting on the Reddit picture, another user said: "When it first popped up, I thought it was a dog."

One more added: "This one is pretty good." Another user said: "I first saw a Vogon from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy."

Explaining how optical illusions work, the American Museum of Natural History says it all comes down to how your brain fills in 'missing' information.

A statement reads: "What you see and what you think you see are different things. Your senses gather information and send it to your brain.

"But your brain does not simply receive this information - it creates your perception of the world. This means that sometimes your brain fills in gaps when there is incomplete information, or creates an image that isn't even there!

"Why does this happen? Evolution! Survival depends on fast reactions. Your brain has evolved to work quickly to piece together whatever bits and fragments it can get - and to do its best to figure out the rest."

This isn't the only optical illusion to have sparked a debate as another has been testing people's brains.

You'll need to put your skills to the test to try and spot the hidden geckos on the wall below - and to make it a sterner assignment, set a timer for 15 seconds and see if you can do it before the time elapses.
