An iPhone crash alert sent Georgia deputies to a residential street in Douglas County early Saturday morning where they found not a crash but two teenagers suffering from gunshot wounds in the front seat of a car in the middle of the road.
Beatriz Vega, 17, and Roberto de Leon, 19, were rushed to a hospital with critical injuries but did not survive.
On Thursday, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said investigators were "tracking leads and evaluating evidence to better understand what occurred before and at the event of gunplay" and asked for help from the public.
Police have provided no solid information about their investigation, but WAGA learned that Vega was a popular student at Pebble Brook High School in neighboring Cobb County where she played soccer.
"She was sweet, smart, very nice with everybody. She was responsible," said Hugh Pineda, the girl's soccer coach and a friend of the family. "She was everything for her family, and me too, as a coach."
