Fargo enhances cybersecurity defenses against phishing and fraud

FARGO -- October is Cybersecurity Awareness month and city of Fargo officials say they're working daily to protect private information and public safety networks.

Chief information security officer Nick Lindhag says the biggest cybersecurity threats to the city are phishing scams and text fraud.

Lindhag said critical infrastructure, such as water utilities and public safety offices, see the highest rates of activity each month. So, they are constantly doing self audits and bringing in partners to audit protections.

All year long, staff are evaluated with phishing tests and they use a security concept called least privilege, which limits users' access to only what they need to do their job

"And then we put protections in place on the systems to alert for any activity that is out of normal. And if we see someone using it when they shouldn't, we will alert on that and follow up," Lindhag said.
