High School Football Picks: Third round of playoffs

Members of the Eldorado High School football team are pictured during the Las Vegas Sun's high school football media day at the Red Rock Resort on July 23, 2024. They include, from left, Siale Pine, Jerome Kalama and Derrieon Robinson.

There are 14 Las Vegas area high school football teams with a game to play this week.

Considering we started the season in August with nearly 50 schools fighting for a state championship, simply having a game to play in the second week of November is an accomplishment to be proud of.

That's especially true for Eldorado.

The Firehawks -- yes, they got a makeover this summer from Sundevils -- have won five straight games in reaching the Class 4A Desert League championship game against Canyon Springs.

Eldorado, for years, had been regulated to the top division because the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association realignment formula used the results from all sports -- and Eldorado's boys soccer team is a power.

But Eldorado has strengthened its program in the lower class and is going on a run reminiscent of those days in the early 2000s with Steven Jackson running the ball on the way to a lengthy NFL career.

The picks column went a respectable 9-4 last week. We are 100 games over .500 at 162-62 on the season.

Finally, a sequel we can't wait to see. Here's hoping for another Arbor View-Coronado game that goes down the wire. More analysis in the Prep Sports Now podcast. Arbor View 29, Coronado 28
