Five MHS athletes ink letters of intent on National Signing Day

Nov. 13 -- MITCHELL -- A quintet of Mitchell High School student-athletes formalized their intentions to compete at the collegiate level by signing national letters of intent on Wednesday afternoon.

As part of National Signing Day, Tenley Peterson, Ashlynn Pollreisz, Emerson Smith, Joslin Sommerville and Markus Talley inked their commitments.

Peterson will join the Dakota Wesleyan women's soccer program next year. A stalwart in the net as the Kernels' goalkeeper for multiple seasons, Peterson was a key piece of the MHS team that finished as Class AA runner-up in 2023, recording 121 saves with eight clean sheets as a junior.

Pollreisz also has a soccer future in front of her, as she'll attend NCAA Division III University of Minnesota, Morris. Like Peterson, Pollreisz was a regular contributor on the Kernels' 2023 Class AA state runner-up squad as a junior, appearing in all 18 games with three goals and an assist for her midfielder position.

Smith signed on to the swim and dive program at the University of South Dakota. While also a floor exercise specialist for the state champion MHS gymnastics team, Smith competes for the Sioux Falls Swim Team and was a USA Swimming Junior Futures qualifier last winter.

Sommerville takes her talents to the competitive cheer team at Mount Marty University in Yankton. Sommerville was a two-time South Dakota Cheerleading Coaches Association's all-state selection as a junior and senior.

Talley has a hoops future with Augustana University in Sioux Falls. Last season, Talley was a Class AA all-state first-team selection after leading the Kernels to a state championship. For his efforts, Talley also earned the Mitchell Republic's boys basketball player of the year award.
