WHITSETT, N.C. (WBTV) - A child died after a sledding accident sent them into an icy pond in central North Carolina this past weekend.
The accident happened on the morning of Saturday, Jan. 11 at a pond at Stoney Creek Golf Club in Whitsett.
First responders were called to the pond regarding a water rescue, and when they arrived, they found the child in the water, the Guilford County Sheriff's Office said. Once out of the water, the child was taken to the hospital and died.
Two first responders and three community members were taken to the hospital as well. Officials told CBS affiliate WFMY that all five of those people have since been released. The station reported that the two first responders were paramedics, while the three civilians tried to save the child.
A neighbor told WFMY that a mother and grandmother were outside with two kids sledding when one of the children slid down the hill and went into the water. A weather system dumped snow across the Triad the day before the accident.
The sheriff's office did not release the name nor age of the child who died, but called the accident a "tragic event."
Deputies said several fire departments and Guilford County EMS came to the pond.
