I can safely say, I think, that we are done with summer weather. That's not to say there won't be a warm day, but the heat os gone...hopefully. But what is NOT gone is the news, and we have some, so shall we?

A fatal accident occurred on September 22, 2024, at around 1:00 p.m. on Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. A 2020 Yamaha motorcycle collided with a 2003 Ford Expedition, turning onto Old South River Road South just south of the South River Bridge. The motorcyclist, 19-year-old Daniel Joseph Helmly Jr. from Lothian, died at the scene, while the Ford's driver and passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The Anne Arundel County Police are investigating.

The Capital is reporting that the tensions between Annapolis Police Chief Ed Jackson and the police union persist after a vote of no confidence in August. The union has criticized Jackson for alleged retaliation and poor management, while Jackson maintains he is focused on upholding standards. Mayor Buckley still stands behind the Chief, and the Chief says as long as he has the backing of the Mayor and the citizens, he will not resign. Mayor Buckley has suggested mediation, but nothing has moved forward there. In a statement to The Capital, Buckley said he believes the department has compartmentalized the issues and "everyone shows up every day." I certainly hope that is not the bar set for the police officers. In our Eye On Annapolis poll, which is VERY unscientific, nearly 70% of the nearly 1000 respondents did not have confidence in the leadership of the Annapolis City Police. I suspect this will get a lot more controversial soon. Stay tuned.

Ten Maryland schools have been named 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education for high academic performance. This recognition highlights academic achievement and efforts to close educational gaps. Public schools did not favor so well. None in Anne Arundel County made tghe grade,. One each in Baltimore, Howard, and Prince Georges Counties, 2 in Montgomery County, and 5 of them were members of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Of note is that St. Mary's Elementary in Annapolis and St. John the Evangelist in Severna Park were both named. Great job!

Annapolis-based author Nadja Maril has released two new books. "Recipes from My Garden", a poetry and essay collection, has been nominated for a National Book Award, and "Who IS Santa?", a picture book, delves into the mystery of Santa Claus. Maril will discuss her works at an event hosted by the Parole Rotary Club on October 8th. You can get more info and see all of Nadja's work at NadjaMaril.com
