du Plessis (22-2) became the first South African medalist at the WAKO World Championships. The South African beat a trio of former champions in his last three fights: Robert Whittaker, Strickland, and Israel Adesanya. He beat Strickland via split decision in January 2024 to win the belt and submitted Adesanya in August.

Strickland (29-6) is 16-6 in the octagon. He had his six-fight win streak snapped by Alex Pereira and went 3-1 after, winning gold in an upset against Adesanya. After losing the belt against du Plessis, he beat Paulo Costa in June.

The 31-year-old du Plessis beat Strickland for the belt following a mixed bag of scorecards. du Plessis, who got into Strickland's head before the fight, landed 137 significant strikes compared to Strickland's 173. The former landed six takedowns.

He hopes to erase any doubts of his ability with a decisive win against Strickland.

"Putting the Strickland thing to bed - I have two decisions in my whole life, one being a split against Strickland [and the other a unanimous decision win over Brad Tavares at UFC 276]," du Plessis told ESPN.

"The guy who has evolved more over the last year since we last fought is the guy who is going to win this fight, and I can't wait to show the evolution on February 9."
