Randy Couture reveals what it was really like to work with Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham in The Expendables... 'Only Sly could pull that off'

Randy Couture has given an insight into what his experience was like, starring in 'The Expendables' with Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham.

The former UFC champion has mesmerized not just MMA fans, but action movie enthusiasts as well.

Since retiring from MMA, Randy Couture has explored the world of acting, solidifying himself as a truly gifted performer.

In 2010, he landed the opportunity to feature in The Expendables, where he worked alongside Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham.

The MMA icon played Toll Road, the demolitions and combat expert of the Expendables, renowned for his amusing tale about how he sustained cauliflower ear.

Alongside Statham, Stallone and a plethora of other talented actors, the film became a huge hit, spawning three sequels.

Flyweight icons: 'When people remember Demetrious Johnson, they will remember Adriano Moraes'

In an exclusive interview with Bloody Elbow, Couture opened up about his behind-the-scenes experiences with two of the best actors of our time.

He beamed: "Jason is a great guy. I love Jason. I got to spend a little bit of time with Jason outside of being on a set or being involved in a film and he's just a fantastic guy, very vigorous and fun to be around.

"He's obviously a very talented actor himself. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels was one of his first films with Guy Ritchie, and it put him on the map, and he's arguably one of the biggest action stars in the industry right now.

"It was definitely a 'pinch me' moment to be involved in Expendables 1, and have that whole cast of guys come together.

"We were synchronizing our watches at the tunnel, and even the crew on the set was a buzz that night, because it was such a unique group of people to bring together in one film, and only Sly (Stallone) could pull that off.

"He's a great guy, a very smart man and a fun guy to work with and for. I've had a blast with those movies. Expendables 1-4 is certainly the biggest property I've been connected to, and hopefully, we'll make a five."

But as much fun as he had filming those movies, Couture credits one film for proving he can act with the best in the industry.

The 61-year-old enthused: "I think Scorpion King 2 was a really big film for me. That really put me on the stage, so to speak, where people looked at what I was doing and said, 'He's not just an athlete trying to act, he can actually carry a role and be in a big film and do some of this stuff.

"My very first one was Cradle to the Grave. The UFC called me, Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz and asked if we wanted to be in that movie.

"There were some underground fight scenes, and they wanted some authentic fighters for those roles. I had one line in the movie.

"Chuck and Tito actually fought each other in that movie. That was a couple of years before they really got into the cage and fought. So, it was pretty interesting."

As well as fighting and acting, Couture knows a thing or two about fashion, teaming up with Affliction to give the world some incredibly cool clothing.

While wearing one of the brand's tops, he said: "This is a retro kind of throwback shirt. Affliction is making a comeback with the younger crowd; that's why I threw this shirt on.

"I've been an Affliction guy for a long time. I think 2005-2006 when I moved to Vegas, I met Tom [Atencio] at an appearance up in Sacramento. He was throwing out shirts like crazy out the back of his Durango.

"He gave me a few shirts, I was like, 'Man, these are really cool, I love the graphics'. He said, 'You've got a big fight coming up with Tim Sylvia, don't you? Let's make a shirt for you'.

"That's what opened up this whole thing with me and Affliction, which ultimately lead to the creation of the Xtreme Couture line of clothing. They manufacture and distribute my clothes.

"My very first walk-out shirt was for the Tim Sylvia fight. We had two skulls facing each other, and they couldn't sell those fast enough. It was crazy.

"At one point, the Xtreme Couture clothing line was sponsoring over 30 fighters. It was giving back and giving the athletes an opportunity to make some money."
