The release of the film adaptation of Wicked has been nothing short of an incredible success, with the film soaring to the top of the box office, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been without the odd glitch being pointed out by some moviegoers. One such issue saw the movie's director, Jon M. Chu, respond on social media to a number of complaints about problems with the sound quality that saw some of the lyrics being drowned out by the orchestral music, or dialogue being too soft to hear. However, Chu has suggested how this can be negated for anyone finding the same problem.

Wicked is not the first movie to suffer complaints about either visual or audio choices made by the director, and while Chu has been asked to give reasons for some of the aesthetics of the musical film, it seems that the sound is something that he says is all down to an error by theaters. Chu wrote on X/Twitter:
"Tell your movie theater to turn it up to a 7. I've gone to a couple of screenings and they are more like a 6.4. If you want it the way it was intended, 7 is the way."
It will be interesting to see how many people take Chu's advice if they believe that they are not getting the complete package that the director intended to deliver. In the meantime, the quality issues that have been encountered by some don't seem to have been enough of a problem to make an impact on the movie's audience review score, which remains at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.

While the sound issues seem to be out of the control of the film's production team, the visual look of the movie is very much something that appears exactly as Chu intended, even if some people have raised some small gripes on the matter.
While speaking with The Globe and Mail, Chu touched on the complaints about the film "lacking color" and being "a little desaturated." In response, he said:
"I mean, there's color all over it. I think what we wanted to do was immerse people into Oz, to make it a real place, because if it was a fake place, if it was a dream in someone's mind, then the real relationships and the stakes that these two girls are going through wouldn't feel real. It's been a matte painting. It's been a video game digital world, but for us, I want to feel the dirt. I want to feel the wear and tear of it. And that means it's not plastic."

Again, despite several such complaints going viral on social media, the impact on the response to the movie has been minimal. Audiences have made it seem like the decade-long wait to see the Broadway musical finally make it to cinemas was more than worth the wait, as Wicked secured a record-breaking $164 million opening weekend worldwide, and is well on the way to becoming one of the biggest musical adaptations in recent memory.
