Arizona State University student charged after reported unprovoked stabbing of classmate

PHOENIX (TNND) -- Arizona police last week charged a woman with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after she reportedly stabbed an Arizona State University (ASU) student.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office arrested 19-year-old Kaci Sloan on the assault charge and disorderly conduct with a weapon for what The Arizona Republic reports was the Aug. 19 stabbing of a student at ASU's West Valley campus.

State prosecutors accused Sloan of stabbing Mara Daffron with a paring knife as the victim walked into a classroom, according to the publication. The attack reportedly ruptured Daffron's spleen, which required surgery at a hospital.

Sloan was unprovoked and stabbed her without "any words spoken," the publication quoted court records as reading. Two people took the knife away from Sloan after the attack and restrained her while other witnesses tended to Daffron, according to The Arizona Republic.

The victim is reportedly in stable condition.

The Arizona Republic noted that Sloan told ASU police she went to the classroom to hurt somebody. She began planning the attack the previous night, telling the officers she believed it would make her problems "go away," according to the publication.

FOX 10 Phoenix reported that Sloan thought Daffron was an easier target than another person she was considering, who was a veteran.

Sloan also had thoughts of hurting people before the stabbing, but felt "disgusted" by them, The Arizona Republic added. She never had a plan of attacking anybody before the incident, according to the publication.

Daffron reportedly told authorities she didn't know Sloan nor understand why she was targeted.
