BLOOMINGTON -- A Springfield man is being held in custody on felony charges after police said he fired a gun near a youth football game in Normal.
Alphonzo T. Davis, 37, is charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class 1 felony, and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, a Class 3 felony.
He appeared in court Thursday for detention hearing. Assistant State's Attorney David Fitt said he filed a petition to detain Davis on the grounds of dangerousness.
First Assistant Public Defender Matthew Koetters said his client stipulated that his arrest was made with probable cause, so the details leading to Davis's arrest were not read in court. Koetters also said Davis did not object to Fitt's petition for detention.
Officers responded Saturday evening to the area of Lincoln and Beech streets after reports of an armed person in the area and multiple reports of gunfire. The shots were reported to have occurred near One Normal Plaza where the Twin City Tigers and Springfield Bears youth football teams were playing.

According to charging documents, Davis is accused of firing a gun at an occupied vehicle and illegally possessing a 9 mm pistol. A man from Normal who was in the occupied vehicle was arrested Wednesday on a preliminary charge of disorderly conduct.

No one was injured in the gunfire. The two youth football teams told The Pantagraph all of their members were safe and accounted for after the shots were fired near the game.
Davis is scheduled to be back in court Oct. 25 for an arraignment.
