Spooky Season: Charleston's most chilling haunted houses that will be sure to give you a scare

Beware if you dare! You're in for a scare!

Across South Carolina, you will find an eerie array of haunted houses and horror trails with a variety of creepy characters and fearsome frights. Let the screams and screeches commence.

Here in the Lowcountry, here are the places you can get spooked leading up to Halloween.

What: This year, you'll navigate Ward 8, Phobia and Fall Out for three unique haunted house and trail experiences. The latter is the classic hayride through the woods, with some frightening twists.

When: Friday-Sunday Oct. 4-13, Thursday-Sunday Oct. 17-27

Where: 2434 N. Highway 17, Mount Pleasant

Holy City Halloween

What: New this year is Holy City Halloween, a ghastly butchery experience in downtown Charleston at the old Woolfe Street Playhouse. It explores the history of the building, which once was a slaughterhouse market, to find out what happens when contaminated meat enters Charleston's docks. You're there to discover the aftermath. There's also an early hours kid-friendly walkthrough available.

When: Wednesday-Sunday Oct. 2-Nov. 2

Price: $100 VIP haunt loft experience, $25 family-friendly general admission, $25 later haunted house general admission

Southern Screams

What: This year's theme at Southern Screams, located by Holy City Brewing, is "Conjured." Venture into the heart of darkness, where ancient practices and the occult intertwine. You're the final ingredient needed for the summoning ritual.

When: Wednesday-Sunday Oct. 2-Nov. 2

Where: 1021 Aragon Ave., North Charleston

XScream Scapes

What: A haunted house meets and escape room in this unique indoor mashup, where scare actors are trapped in each room with you until you find a way out. Journey through time from room to room until you emerge back in reality. But have you really escaped?
